Rule
No. 26th :-
“For + time” or “Since + time” is not used in the first or second part of the sentence of any tense. It must be
used in forth part of the sentence.
Example:- We were waiting for four
hours. (Wrong sentence)
We had been waiting for four hours. (Right Sentence)
I teach you since
morning. (Wrong sentence)
I have been teaching you since morning. (Right
Sentence)
Rule No. 27th :- The following words are used in past
tense, not in present tense:- ago, yesterday, last year, last month, last week
etc.
Example:-
The girl has arrived two hours ago. (Wrong Sentence)
The girl arrived two hours
ago. (Right Sentence)
When “Yet”
or “so far” is used in the sense of “Abhi tak” then these are used in
past perfect.
Example:-
They did not reply so far. (Wrong Sentence)
They have not replied so
far. (Right Sentence)
Rule No. 28th :- If any part of a sentence is in
Past Tense, then the same tense must be used other parts of the sentence.
Example :-
I noticed that the boy is reading. (Wrong
Sentence)
I noticed that the boy was
reading. (Right Sentence)
But,
The teacher told me that water
boils at 1000C. (Right Sentence)
I pointed out that might is
right. (Right
Sentence)
Rule No. 29th :- These verbs are used in first or
third part of the sentence of any tense:- know, want, wish, desire, hope, hate,
love, see, smell, hear, feel, etc.
Example :-
We had been knowing them for 10 years. (Wrong Sentence)
We had known them for 10
years. (Right Sentence)
The room is smelling
bad. (Wrong Sentence)
The room smells bad. (Right Sentence)
Rule No. 30th :- “Were” is used after the following
words to represent or tell unreal facts,:- If, as if, as though, suppose, wish
etc.
Example:- If I were the Prime – Minister I would take
such steps.
She dresses herself she if
were a boy.
But when
Main verb is used then it becomes V2.
Example
:- He walks as if the road belongs to
his father.
